Team,
Gubernatorial elections matter — just look at what’s happening in Texas right now.
The Republican-led state legislature passed an extreme bill establishing a six-week abortion ban, preventing people from legally accessing abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. And far-right Governor Greg Abbott signed it into law.
This backwards law also incentivizes people in and out of Texas to sue anyone — doctors, nurses, receptionists, friends, and family members — who helps a patient access an abortion after six weeks, by granting them a reward of at least $10,000.
This is the most restrictive anti-choice bill in the country, and it almost happened right here in Iowa. In 2018, extremists in Iowa’s state legislature passed a similar six-week abortion ban, and Governor Kim Reynolds even signed it, attacking Iowans’ right to choice. Thankfully, it was struck down in a district court for violating our state constitution.
I personally know the critical importance of having options. When my wife Amelia and I were first trying to have children, we unfortunately experienced multiple miscarriages. At one point when Amelia was pregnant, she told me something was wrong; I came home from work and found her curled up in pain. At the hospital, we sadly learned that my wife was experiencing an ectopic pregnancy that could end her life if we decided against terminating the pregnancy. Today, Amelia is still by my side and we have two beautiful daughters. As I told my colleagues in the state House earlier this year when opposing another anti-choice bill: I’m glad my wife and I had a choice.
Every person and family, no matter where you live, deserves that same choice. That’s why — unlike Governor Reynolds — I’m committed to defending Roe v. Wade and access to safe, legal, affordable abortion across Iowa.
If you’re with me, add your name alongside mine in calling on the Biden Administration and Congress to stop this dangerous law in Texas and uphold every American’s right to reproductive choice established by Roe v. Wade.
Thank you,
Ras
