Dear MoveOn member,
The Supreme Court sided with right-wing Republican legislators to effectively end the protections for abortions provided by Roe v. Wade.
By banning nearly all abortions in Texas, Republicans have created a model that can be repeated state after state. And the Supreme Court—which Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell packed with right-wing appointees through Republican power grabs and stolen seats—has made clear which side it is on.
This is one more reminder that Trump's packed Supreme Court will make it impossible to protect abortion rights, ensure voting rights, regulate corporations, and so much more, until we rebalance the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court has allowed Texas's outrageous abortion ban to go into effect—banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, before many people even realize they are pregnant or have time to see a provider and make a decision to have an abortion. This makes abortion impossible for most Texans, and it will fall most heavily on communities of color, lower-income communities, immigrant communities, and young Texans.
It also shows that the Supreme Court will no longer defend the protections promised by Roe, which afforded some rights to abortion even after decades of attacks from conservatives.
President Biden must appoint new justices and expand the court in order to rebalance it against the stolen seats and unprecedented right-wing power grabs—and in doing so help fight for abortion rights, voting rights, regulations on corporate power, and more. Democrats in the House and Senate have introduced the Judiciary Act of 2021 to do just that—and more Democrats need to sign on to this legislation and quickly move to expand and rebalance the Supreme Court.
Thanks for all you do.
