After we protested across the street from the White House last week, Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked questions about what President Biden was doing to push the Senate on federal voting rights legislation. She didn’t give us a real answer.
We need you to join us in telling President Biden directly that his commitment to voting rights doesn’t mean anything if the protections in the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act aren’t passed into law. It’s vital that he acts without delay so that the Senate can pass these bills as soon as they return from recess.
With another disastrous voting rights decision by the Supreme Court this summer, it’s clear we need the protections in both the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in order to ensure that all eligible voters – especially the voters of color who are being targeted by right-wing lawmakers – have access to the ballot box. The White House has reopened its comment line from 11 AM - 3 PM ET from Tuesdays through Thursdays every week, giving us a new opportunity to connect directly with the one person left who might be able to sway the Senate: the President.
President Biden has spoken forcefully on the need for greater federal protections for voting rights – and yet he neglects to discuss the only remaining barrier to their passage: the filibuster. We won’t let our country be dragged back into the era of Jim Crow voter suppression laws by white supremacists, President Biden needs to use his bully pulpit to insist the Senate eliminate the filibuster as an obstacle to voting rights legislation.
