Women and
activists have been ringing the alarm for years as GOP state lawmakers
introduced dozens of sweeping bills that would dramatically restrict
abortion access, and Republicans in Congress mobilized to force
hyper-conservative nominees onto the Supreme Court.

Today, those warnings have been vindicated.

Texas just enacted a radical 6-week abortion ban that in practice denies
millions of women the right to choose. By refusing to respond to an
emergency request to block this new law, the United States Supreme Court
has effectively overturned Roe v. Wade.

Let’s be clear: Roe v. Wade and a woman’s constitutional right to choose
are fundamental rights. Banning abortions, which this law effectively
does, does not stop women from getting abortions. It only makes them more
dangerous. The immediate impact of the Texas abortion law is to strip the
rights — and potentially threaten the lives of — millions of women.

But Texas Republicans are not the only leaders at fault. The Supreme Court
chose to remain silent as women’s fundamental and constitutional rights
are torn away. An unelected body with lifetime appointments is making
policy decisions without even having to sign its name. This should be a
wake-up call that all policymakers should be accountable to the people —
that’s why Ro introduced term limits for SCOTUS.

Today is a dark day for our country and for the fight for reproductive
justice. If you are in a position to, it is also a good day to [ [link removed]- ]split a
contribution between Texas abortion funds that are fighting to ensure
women can still receive reproductive care.

We cannot allow nearly fifty years of constitutional protections ensured
by Roe v. Wade to expire in the shadows. Together we must fight this ban
in Texas, and all unconstitutional abortion bans so that everyone has the
autonomy to make their own health care decisions.

Thanks for taking action,

Ro Khanna
