Abortion is health care and a constitutional right.
And today, the Supreme Court directly attacked these inalienable truths by allowing an abortion ban in Texas that effectively upends Roe v. Wade.
This harmful and oppressive law makes abortions illegal after six-weeks of pregnancy — when many people don’t even know they are pregnant, and it includes instances of rape and incest. The law also places a bounty of $10,000 on abortion providers or anyone who helps faciliate an abortion after six weeks.
These abortion restrictions have always been about abusing power and taking away the right for people to choose what to do with their bodies. This is the fight of our lives — and we’re not going to allow these attacks on our reproductive freedom. At this moment, access to abortion care in Texas has become extremely limited, and patients in the state urgently need our support.
This is what we feared when Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Survivors warned that sexual assault is about abuse of power, and a judge credibly accused of such shouldn’t be trusted with the power to decide the rights of the vulnerable.
We know that this harmful and oppressive law will disproportionately affect low-income communities and communities of color in Texas. While the wealthy will have the means to access safe abortion care in other states, the most vulnerable will not.
We won’t stop fighting to secure our reproductive freedom.
In solidarity,
Team AOC
