BREAKING: After Silence From Supreme Court, Texas Clinics Confront Near-Total Abortion Ban
"The law, which prohibits abortions after six weeks and went into effect on Wednesday, was drafted by Texas lawmakers with the goal of frustrating efforts to challenge it in federal court." - New York Times
Devastating news for reproductive rights, John.
This morning, the Supreme Court refused to block Texas' six-week abortion ban. Texas now has the most extreme abortion laws in the country, outlawing abortion before approximately 90% of women know they’re pregnant.
But this law doesn't just make most abortions illegal. It encourages citizens to file civil suits against abortion providers or anyone who helps facilitate an abortion after the six-week period (such as someone driving a pregnant person to an abortion clinic) by offering a monetary reward.
This law will prevent people in Texas from receiving the reproductive health care they need, and the Supreme Court refusing to block it leaves the door open for other states to follow suit. It's only a matter of time before we see similar extreme anti-choice laws introduced in states across the country.
As the only Democratic female doctor in Congress, Kim knows how important access to reproductive care is. That's why she's fighting back against these attacks on reproductive rights to ensure that personal health decisions remain between a person and their doctor only.
