At midnight last night, Texas enacted the most restrictive abortion law in the nation. This law prohibits abortions after six weeks, before most people know they are pregnant, and allows individuals to sue abortion providers and anyone who helps someone access an abortion — from a friend who calls to make an appointment to the ride-share driver who takes them to the clinic.

Make no mistake: this law is radical, extremist, and dangerous. We cannot let this law become the blueprint for destroying reproductive rights across this country.

Every woman is entitled to make her own choices about her body. If she is pregnant and, for whatever reason, cannot bring the pregnancy to term, that is her decision to make, in consultation with her family and medical professionals. She doesn’t owe anybody an explanation, least of all politicians. That’s the law of the land, established by the Supreme Court in its 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

But if Republicans take back control of the House in 2022, they will do everything they can to ban abortion at a federal level — and thanks to Donald Trump’s far-right Supreme Court, they will be able to overturn Roe v. Wade.

It is absolutely critical that we protect and expand our Democratic majority in Congress so we can do whatever it takes to defend Roe v. Wade and reproductive rights.
