It’s unconscionable that the Supreme Court upheld a Texas ban on abortions after six weeks. Most women don’t even know they’re pregnant within the six-week window.

Further, this new law allows anyone in the state, including private individuals without any connection to the matter, to sue anyone who performs or aids banned abortions for a $10,000 bounty. Doctors. Uber drivers taking you to the clinic. You name it.

This is another blatant attempt by a Republican-controlled state legislature to restrict and control women’s healthcare decisions. Quite frankly, it’s despicable that the GOP will argue that mask mandates are a threat to constitutional liberties while at the same time stripping away women’s bodily autonomy and reproductive rights.

Right now, we need to rally together to defend Roe v. Wade and support organizations that fight for safe and equal access to abortions.

Even though three in four Americans believe Roe v. Wade should be law, the GOP has nearly succeeded in practically invalidating this landmark decision in states like Texas to make a statement to Democrats and garner support from their most far-right followers.

In the almost 50 years since Roe v. Wade was decided, Democrats have repeatedly gone to bat against Republicans to protect this historic ruling. It’s time for Congress to act instead of leaving it up to the courts to decide.

We must pass legislation that solidifies every woman’s right to an abortion. It is basic healthcare — plain and simple.
