When the clock struck midnight last night, residents of Texas were placed under the strictest anti-abortion measures in the country. Texas Senate Bill 8, which passed earlier this year, is a direct attack on the reproductive freedoms enshrined in Roe v. Wade and threatens the very foundations of this historic ruling.
Yet the Supreme Court has been eerily silent on the law when asked to issue a ruling preventing it from taking effect, and as we wait to see how and if the Court responds to the request, we need supporters like you to SPEAK OUT against this disastrous law that threatens reproductive freedom and affirm your commitment to protecting choice!
Texas’s SB 8 unleashes what amounts to vigilante justice for those seeking health care from their physician by banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, even in the case of rape or incest.
Instead of the state enforcing the draconian restrictions, the law sets up a twisted incentive for private individuals to step in and sue others they suspect of having or providing abortion care -- the patient, their physician, and nearly anyone who may have assisted in facilitating the procedure. The incentive: a $10,000 “reward” for successfully suing a recipient or provider of abortion.
The intent is clear – to force all health centers that provide abortions in the state to close by saddling them with lawsuits that consume their time and resources, and to intimidate patients seeking abortion care.
We cannot and will not go back to the days of back-alley abortions – we must speak out in opposition to SB 8 and remain firm in our commitment to protecting reproductive choice!
With the current conservative majority on the Supreme Court, Roe may be in serious jeopardy in the months ahead and we cannot allow the Far Right to win.
