John,
Today is a dark day. Legislation banning abortions after six weeks is now the law of the land in Texas.
The new laws are expected to block a majority of abortion patients who receive services in the state — and put an effective end to Roe v. Wade protections in Texas. What's more, anti-abortion extremists can now sue anyone in Texas that they believe is providing abortions or assisting someone in accessing abortion after six weeks.
I'm heartbroken at what this will mean for Texans and the dangerous precedent that this conservative Supreme Court has set by allowing this law to go into effect. This law is a direct attack on Black and brown communities, poor people with limited resources, and millions of Texans. Abortion is health care, and no one should be prevented from getting the care they need.
I don't know how I can make it any clearer. Abolishing the filibuster and expanding the Supreme Court is a matter of life and death. Republicans aren't stopping any time soon; they'll keep eroding people's rights in state after state after state, unless the Senate acts now. Because it's not just abortion rights, John. It's voting rights. It's workers' rights. It's civil rights. It's our democracy.
We must act boldly before it's too late. We need to pressure our senators to abolish the filibuster and expand the Supreme Court, amongst other things. We need to mobilize and organize and make sure our voices are heard. And we need to do everything we can to support those around us who are struggling.
Peace and love,
Jamaal Bowman
