Dear friend, Mercy Corps is committed to the safety and wellbeing of the Afghan people, and we are deeply concerned about the escalating crisis in Afghanistan. The recent violence follows years of conflict, political instability, and economic turmoil that has led to more than 4 million Afghans being displaced from their homes, including 390,000 people newly displaced this year. Mercy Corps has worked in Afghanistan since 1986, partnering with communities to improve their quality of life, from health and sanitation to agriculture and vocational training. Due to current security concerns, our teams have temporarily paused programming. We hope to resume in-country operations as soon as it is safe to do so. Even before the current crisis, hunger and malnutrition had reached alarming numbers, with more than 5 million people experiencing emergency levels of hunger. Nearly half of all children under five will be acutely malnourished this year. The number of Afghans in need of humanitarian assistance has nearly doubled since last year, reaching 18.4 million people — half the population. If you agree that Afghans need humanitarian assistance from the global community, add your name now. We’ve set a goal of 20,000 signatures to show the people of Afghanistan that we support them in the face of the current crisis. Please join us. The coming days, weeks, and months will be especially challenging for the people of Afghanistan. I want you to know that Mercy Corps’ commitment to our team and communities in Afghanistan is stronger than ever. We appreciate your support along the way. Sincerely, Craig Redmond, Senior Vice President of Programs, Mercy Corps |
