Today is a dark day in Texas.
The Texas GOP-led state legislature passed and far-right Republican Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill into law that bans abortion after only six weeks of pregnancy. Many people don’t even realize they’re pregnant at six weeks!
Not only that, but this law emboldens citizens to report and sue anyone who helps a patient receive an abortion after six weeks, even if someone so much as drives a patient to the hospital. This cruel law puts a $10,000 bounty on abortion providers, doctors, friends, and family members of patients who help provide this care, and will undoubtedly lead to unnecessary deaths.
This law is an abhorrent attack on Roe v. Wade and a person’s right to choose — and the Supreme Court has the ability to stop it. But so far, SCOTUS has refused to step in, allowing this draconian and dangerous law to go into effect as of 12:00 AM this morning.
Reproductive choice is under attack across the country, including right here in Montana. I’ve always stood up for Montanans’ ability to access safe, legal abortion. Now, it’s on us to come together and stand with people in Texas, and the groups who are fighting to defeat this blatant assault on Roe v. Wade and reproductive freedom.
There are a number of organizations working on the ground in Texas, day in and out, to stop this abortion law and ensure people have access to safe, affordable, and legal abortion. Join me in supporting them by making a contribution of any amount to fuel their efforts in this critical moment.
