This is a dark time for abortion rights in Texas.

Senate Bill 8, a bill that bans abortions around six weeks into a pregnancy (which is before many women even realize they’re pregnant in the first place) just became law. This new law is a direct violation of Roe v. Wade and will make it nearly impossible to access abortion in the state of Texas.

Right now, Texas is setting a dangerous legal precedent and is strengthening a path for states to override people’s constitutional rights. That’s why Jessica Cisneros is advocating to protect abortion rights — because she knows that quality reproductive care, including access to abortion, is necessary to achieve economic security for low-income Black women and Latina women.

But Jessica’s opponent, Henry Cuellar, is one of the last remaining anti-choice Democrats in Congress. That’s one of the main reasons why we must replace him with Jessica Cisneros so she can fight for reproductive justice in Congress at all costs. Defeating Rep. Cuellar is one of the most important things we can do to turn the tide on anti-choice politics on a national level.

With the future abortion rights on the line nationally, we need a progressive champion in Congress like Jessica who will fight to codify Roe v. Wade by passing legislation to ensure that all people have unfettered access to abortion care, and who will repeal the Hyde Amendment to make abortion more affordable and accessible.

While this is a dark time in Texas, we cannot despair. We have a real opportunity to fight for reproductive justice. But as long as anti-choice Democrats like Henry Cuellar remain in power, abortion rights will remain on the chopping block.
