Last night, Texas’s Senate Bill 8 became law, banning abortions as early as six weeks into pregnancy -- before many people even realize they are pregnant.
The effects of this bill are immediate and devastating. It cuts off access to abortion for millions, authorizes any person to sue someone who provides an abortion after six weeks, and incentivizes these lawsuits by awarding a bounty of at least $10,000 for every lawsuit. That’s right -- Texas is creating bounty hunters to go after abortion providers.
This new law is one of the most toxic, anti-choice, dangerous pieces of legislation to target reproductive healthcare in the country -- and we won’t let it stand.
Millions of Texans already struggle to access reproductive healthcare, and the burden of this bill will fall most heavily on poor, rural, Black and Hispanic Texans.
Abortion is legal. Abortion is healthcare. We won’t stand for any back-room midnight attempts to take away protected healthcare from millions of Texans.
