Hi John! It’s nice to meet you, I'm Shelly.
I’ve been a super volunteer with Women’s March since 2020. Together, my fellow volunteers and I reached out to voters leading up to the election and helped organize get-out-the-vote efforts.
I’m proud of the work we did to change the tides of our country and kick Trump out of office — but it’s clear that our work is nowhere near over and that there’s an uphill battle ahead of us to address the rising wave of white nationalism in our country.
That’s why I’m reaching out today to share with you the volunteer work I’ve been doing lately with Women’s March and United Vision Project to reach out to folks who may be sympathetic to extreme nationalist movements and have deep conversations to better understand their points of view.
Like a lot of other people when the pandemic began, our local shelter-in-place directive left me with a lot of time on my hands. I soon discovered that there were lots of ways I can volunteer remotely like writing postcards and texting for GOTV efforts to help groups like Women’s March reach out to voters leading up to the election.
It was a great way to learn new skills and soon I started taking on more support roles for different volunteer programs at Women’s March. But when the election ended, I wanted to continue learning new skills and contributing my existing skills to push for the change our country urgently needs.
So in May, I joined the United Vision Project. Together, we’re reaching out to people with conservative beliefs who may be sympathetic to extreme nationalist movements and ideas. With rigorous curiosity and radical hospitality, we have deep conversations over text message and phone to better understand others' points of view. The goal is to gather the largest data set ever compiled on this topic so we can understand and learn how to address white nationalism.
Over the last few months, I’ve become very involved with UVP — first as a texter and now as a member of the Conversation Review Team. The heart of this project is having tough conversations with people we don’t agree with — which is something I usually shy away from in my personal life! Because it’s over text (and with a stranger), I’m able to let go of my need to be “right” about a particular issue, and to just focus on listening to what the person is telling me.
The conversations may be difficult, but they are an important step toward creating genuine change. That’s why today I want to invite you to join us, John.
