Dear Friend --
Last night the Supreme Court let Texas's reprehensible abortion restrictions take effect. Texas has now all but banned abortion for the more than 14 million women who live there and turned anti-choice zealots into bounty hounters. The Supreme Court's actions will embolden Republican legislatures around the country to enact similar laws and end the right to an abortion in much of the country.
WHEN ABORTION IS OUTLAWED, IT STILL HAPPENS! It just becomes prohibitively expensive, accessible only to wealthy women, and exponentially more dangerous for anyone who needs to take that difficult decision.
That is why I was proud to join my Democratic colleagues in the House to pass the first spending bill in 45 years that excludes the discriminatory Hyde Amendment, which bans government-funded healh plans from covering abortion. But every Republican in the Senate voted to re-impose Hyde, perpetuating decades of health care discrimination that deprive low-income women of the right to make decisions about their own bodies.
That is why I am asking you to join me in signing this petition to demand that Congress repeal the Hyde Amendment and require all federal health insurance plans to include safe, accessible abortions for women, regardless of their privilege.
Thank you and keep fighting,
