The upcoming statewide election in Virginia is likely to have major implications for the national midterms that are right around the corner. Often viewed as a bellwether to the national political climate, Virginia has been crucial in proving the popularity of progressive policies and the national shift towards a more progressive electorate.
This year, the Republican candidate for governor is a Trump idolizer, who despite his seemingly moderate campaign pledges, has proven to be really nothing more than a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Someone who would advocate for a far-right and regressive agenda if elected - such as his strong anti-choice views, opposition to gun safety reforms, opposition to common-sense COVID safety measures, and more.[1][2]
Voter turnout is going to be crucial in the Virginia election and People For is proud to once again be partnering with our friends at Vote Forward for a unique letter-writing Get Out the Vote campaign.
If recent polling is any indication, it’s this kind of voter outreach that’s going to be CRUCIAL to progressive victories up and down the ballot. Currently in the race for governor, the Democrat is leading by a margin of just 5%, well within the margin of error, with over 20% of voters undecided.[3]
By signing up today to write letters you can help increase turnout among voters in underrepresented communities whose voices are often missing at the ballot box but are necessary to ensuring we have a more robust representative democracy.
Virginia is a shining example for the rest of the country of the successes a state can attain by electing progressive leadership, and this year it’s vital that we protect and build on our recent gains. We’re so proud of the work that we and our members have done over several election cycles to expand the electoral map in this critically important bellwether state, and we hope you’ll join us for the next stage of this fight.
