We’re excited for you to be one of the first to hear: today, The Trevor Project is honoring Grammy Award-winning artist Lil Nas X with our inaugural Suicide Prevention Advocate of the Year Award.

You may know him best for his chart-topping “Old Town Road” or “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name),” but every day, Lil Nas X is creating space for candid conversations around mental health and sexual identity by vulnerably sharing his own journey to self-acceptance and expression.

Lil Nas X uses his platform to shed light on mental health issues many LGBTQ young people face. He has bravely discussed his own struggles with his sexuality and suicidal ideation, advocated around mental issues, and unapologetically celebrated his queer identity. It’s for these reasons (and so many others) that we are honoring Lil Nas X for his unwavering support of LGBTQ youth.

Today begins National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and there is still so much crucial work to do to end suicide among LGBTQ youth. According to our recent National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health, 42% of LGBTQ seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, including more than half of transgender and nonbinary youth. And it has also been a record-breaking year for anti-transgender legislation and violence against the LGBTQ community.

Amidst it all, Lil Nas X has been committed to supporting The Trevor Project in our mission to end suicide among LGBTQ young people. And The Trevor Project could not be more thrilled to honor Lil Nas X with our first-ever Suicide Prevention Advocate of the Year Award as he continues to fight for mainstream queer representation and elevate important issues around mental health.
