Last week, over 2,000 water protectors converged at the Minnesota State Capitol to demand that President Joe Biden, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Assistant Secretary of the Army Corps of Engineers Jaime Pinkham honor treaties with Indigenous tribes and take immediate action to stop the Line 3 tar sands pipeline.
In response to their peaceful protest, Governor Walz sent hundreds of state troopers carrying zip ties, batons, and weapons to intimidate activists on the ground, dismantle the hand-painted tipis that filled the lawn, and build a fence around the Capitol.
Governor Walz is violating his oath of office, which requires him to honor the U.S. Constitution — including Article 6 which states that treaties are the supreme law of the land.
Denying treaty rights is a violation of international law and civil rights. That’s why, John, we must continue to hold our ground and send elected officials at all levels a clear message: We won’t stop until treaty rights are honored. We won’t stop until you #StopLine3.
We know what we’re up against, but we know that when we unite in solidarity, we can achieve the impossible. Together, we already elevated this fight, brought it into the national spotlight, and delivered over 200,00 petition signatures to the Biden administration.
Together, we can show this country that a livable future centering Indigenous voices is possible. But we can’t do it alone.
