John,

GREAT NEWS! Governor Cooper has vetoed HB 398, Pistol Purchase Permit Repeal!

However, it could still become law if lawmakers vote to override his veto. Can you CLICK to ask your lawmakers to support Governor Cooper’s veto of HB 398?

“Gun permit laws reduce gun homicides and suicides and reduce the availability of guns for criminal activity. At a time of rising gun violence, we cannot afford to repeal a system that works to save lives. The legislature should focus on combating gun violence instead of making it easier for guns to end up in the wrong hands

- Governor Cooper's veto statement, issued 8/30/21

Without our Pistol Purchase Permit system, anyone could buy a handgun from a private, unlicensed seller at a gun show or on the Internet – no questions asked.

We know what happens when these laws are repealed: after Missouri’s 2007 repeal of a similar law, their firearm homicide rate increased 47% from 2008 – 2016, and their suicide rate increased 24% from 2008 – 2017, compared to the rate expected had they not repealed this law.[1]

We cannot repeal this law, knowing that repeal will create more firearm injuries and deaths. Tell your lawmakers to sustain Governor Cooper’s veto of HB 398.

Thank you!

Becky & Sara
