John,
Now that the Census Bureau has released the final redistricting data, I want to loop you in on our strategy to prevent GOP gerrymandering over the next few months. This is a longer email, so if you don't have time to read it but want to support the most critical phase of our work before tonight's end-of-month deadline, you can chip in here.
First, let's talk about the new census data. It clearly shows that the U.S. is getting younger and more diverse and people are increasingly concentrated in urban and suburban areas. That scares Republicans. That's why they want to gerrymander the country along partisan and racial lines in an attempt to hold on to power.
In fact, the head of the National Republican Redistricting Trust (a gerrymandering front group) has said that he thinks the GOP can draw "20 to 30 reliable seats" for themselves in redistricting. They're being very open about how they expect to use map manipulation to their political advantage!
So our job is to hold them accountable when they make these kinds of statements and engage the public in demanding fair maps and more competitive elections rather than manipulated maps that ensure GOP victories. We’re fighting for fair maps that reflect the will of the voters, and if Republicans attempt to gerrymander their way to power, we will be ready to take action.
