Registration for the world’s largest fact-checking summit opened today! Poynter’s International Fact-Checking Network has planned an informative four days for everyone who cares about the integrity of our interconnected information ecosystem for this year’s Global Fact.
This virtual event, scheduled for Oct. 20-23, will span 16 time zones and bring thousands of people together to address global mis- and disinformation. Global Fact 8 has a takeaway for everyone, whether you’re a fact-checker, journalist, technologist, policy maker, leader, educator or consumer.

I’m planning my summit experience and am really excited to see:

* Keynote speaker Claire Wardle, co-founder and U.S. director of First Draft. She will reflect on the state of our information ecosystem from a pandemic perspective.
* Andrew Pattison, digital business solutions manager of the World Health Organization. He will discuss the impact of collaboration to address COVID-19 misinformation during a panel with fact-checkers from Brazil, Spain and India.
* Rasmus Nielsen, director of Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. He will moderate a discussion to explore the incoming policy debates and regulations that will significantly affect European fact-checkers’ fight against disinformation through public policy.
* IFCN director Baybars Örsek. He will lead a panel with Facebook to discuss the Third-Party Fact-Checking Program on its five-year anniversary.

Covering Jails and Police Reform

Webinar series, Sept. 22-Oct. 20, 2021
Local jails are the gateway to the U.S. justice system, but they are overloaded, overused and under-covered by resource-strapped journalists.

While local jails were intended to house people who were deemed to be a societal danger or flight risk before trial, they have become warehouses — often for people who have not been convicted of a crime and cannot afford to bail themselves out. In many cities, jails are increasingly filled with women, juveniles, immigrants and people who suffer from addictions and mental illness.
In this webinar series, you will learn how to cover local jails that continue to be COVID-19 hot spots. You will prepare for significant legislative and local changes in policing, spurred by both politics and protests. Formerly incarcerated people will give you insight into the effects of journalism on their life after lockup.
