John,
Today, I was thrilled to welcome our children back for the 2021-2022 school year!
Our leaders at Chicago Public Schools, in partnership with the Chicago Department of Public Health and Dr. Arwady, have worked hard to put a broad array of mitigations in place to make sure our classrooms are safe and clean--including more than $100 million in new investments, ventilation improvements, enhanced cleaning protocols and more. Plus, we’re doing a full court press to get every eligible kid vaccinated as soon as possible.

I want to thank everyone who plays a part in creating a nourishing educational ecosystem for our students. Teachers. Parents. Paraprofessionals. Special education classroom assistants. Principals and other administrators. Clerks. Bus drivers and bus aides. Janitorial staff. School nurses. Building engineers. Lunchroom staff. Safe passage workers. CTA drivers. And so many more Chicagoans who fuel our public schools every day.
Here’s what we know for sure: our children need to be in school every day so that they can learn, grow and flourish. And we’ve shown that we can do that safely by working together and following the science and the public health guidance.
Thanks for doing your part.
Happy first day of school!
Sincerely,
Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot
