John,
Hurricane Ida made landfall on the U.S. Gulf Coast on Sunday with sustained 150 mph winds, causing widespread destruction, flooding, and power outages in communities across Mississippi and Louisiana.
While the winds and rain have ceased, authorities are saying it will be weeks until power is restored to the New Orleans area, and the effects of Ida are sure to be felt for even longer. Volunteers are already on the ground in heavily impacted areas, ready to assist local communities as they begin the long process of finding safety, stability, and recovery.
Can you help us come to the aid of neighbors in need by making a contribution toward recovery efforts? Mutual Aid Disaster Relief is working to provide immediate relief to people on the ground. 2021 is proving to be yet another unprecedented year of crisis. Climate change-driven disasters have swept the nation, disproportionately affecting Black and brown communities and elderly, unhoused, and low-income Americans.
In cities like New Orleans and Detroit, flooding and property damage was exacerbated by existing deteriorations in infrastructure. Across the west, communities are reeling from non-stop wildfires and drought, bringing water systems to the brink of collapse. And Haiti faced heavy rains just two days after a magnitude-7.2 earthquake rocked the country. All as a global pandemic continues to rage, and the same communities continue to bear the brunt of crisis after crisis.
We can’t wait for relief — we need to care for one another. Your direct contribution to these mutual aid funds and groups on the ground will go to addressing the most urgent and immediate needs like food, water, first aid, generator supplies, and more.
