As this summer comes to a close, I can’t help but think about the many people I met on my journey across the country over the last few months. One person that stands out is a single father I had the pleasure of meeting during my stop in Chicago at a community-based hunger-relief agency, Beyond Hunger. 

Prior to the pandemic, this father was making a good living working in the trade convention exhibit business. Once Covid-19 hit, the industry was demolished overnight and he was left without any income. Urgently needing a way to continue feeding himself and his child, he sought the assistance of Beyond Hunger.

This father is now a member of Beyond Hunger’s Client Advisory Council, which provides guidance to the organization about the needs of food insecure households in Cook County based on their lived experiences. Parents like him across the country who are battling hunger need our support.

Sadly, this was just one of many stories of food insecurity I heard during my journey through 37 states this summer. As we continue to advocate for the policies and programs that will help the tens of millions of Americans continuing to struggle with food insecurity, one of the greatest tools we have is the support from the many generous donors such as yourself.
