Dear John,
For decades, the mainstream news media has operated on the assumption that there are two sides to every story, and that their job is to represent the balanced, reasonable center.
Here’s the problem: That’s just not true.
Today, one side is trying to protect voting rights, and the other is trying to suppress votes under the guise of “election integrity.” One side is advocating for science, and the other is pushing pandemic conspiracy theories and climate denial.
There is no moral equivalence between Marjorie Taylor Greene supporting the assassination of Democratic elected officials and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez advocating for universal health care.
Equating them is misleading and dangerous, and it allows people like Donald Trump to get away with pushing ever more extreme and hateful lies, knowing that the media will default back to their “both sides” false equivalence.
This is the media bias that no one is talking about. And to fight against it, Inequality Media is launching a new initiative using video explainers, daily posts, interviews, and TikToks to expose the truth. By leveraging our large and growing social media following, we’re able to reach an audience large enough to have a real impact.
Will you make a donation to help fund this urgent project and all of our crucial work?
I hate to ask for money, but you know what’s even worse? Watching the right wing get away with their hateful lies and not get called out by the mainstream media. That’s why we must step up.
And the team at Inequality Media will stretch your donation as far as it can go.
The team is small but mighty. By keeping staffing costs low and leveraging the power of the internet, we’re able to reach a huge audience that would cost millions of dollars to reach through paid ads on TV.
That’s why I sincerely believe that Inequality Media is one of the best places you can put your money to make progressive political change.
Battling white supremacy is not the same as advocating it. Passing laws to prevent voter suppression is not the same as passing laws to suppress votes. Fighting for our democracy is not the same as seeking to destroy it.
The media equating both sides, one “left” and one “right,” suggests that there’s a moderate middle between hate and inclusion, between democracy and proto-fascism.
This is misleading, dangerous, and morally wrong. We can’t let it stand.
Please donate whatever you can afford to help support the small but mighty team at Inequality Media. The future of our democracy is at stake.
I couldn’t be more grateful and humbled by your support,
Robert Reich
