Capitol Police are bravely taking justice into their own hands by filing a lawsuit against Donald Trump and the far-right violent extremist groups that he conspired with to invade our Capitol on Jan. 6. The lawsuit is clear on their central role during the events on January 6th. “Many Defendants in this case planned, aided, and actively participated in that attack. All Defendants are responsible for it”

The lawsuit also accuses Donald Trump has his allies of violating the Ku Klux Klan Act. In the past, this Act was critical to destroying the power of the KKK in the post-confederate South. We must hope that it serves a similar purpose today.

The Capitol Police officers were on the frontlines of democracy on January 6th. They fought valiantly to protect the lives of Congressmembers, our Capitol, and hundreds of years of American democracy. Some of them did not survive that fight and the ones that did are now suffering constant abuse from Trump and his followers.

Lt. Michael Byrd, the officer that fatally shot insurrectionist Ashli Babbit, had to publicly reveal his identity in the face of countless death threats. But he has no regrets about being at the Capitol on Jan. 6th, because he said “I know members of Congress, as well as my fellow officers and staff, were in jeopardy and in serious danger. And that’s my job.”

Defending our Capitol against an insurrection incited by a sitting President should not be a part of the Capitol Police job description. Will you stand with our Capitol Police and their fight for justice by signing our petition today?
