Dear John, In the coming weeks, US Envoy to Yemen Tim Lenderking will travel to Saudi Arabia. Our friends at Yemeni Liberation Movement met with him recently to demand that he use his meeting with the Saudi government to lift the blockade on Yemen. In the meeting with the US-Yemeni community, he said he would do just that! Now help us keep him accountable by emailing him and echoing the Yemeni community’s demands! Right now, the blockade is stopping 544,000 tons of fuel from entering Yemen. This fuel is needed to power hospitals that are full with malnourished children and COVID-19 patients. Fuel is needed to make sure food aid can get to even the most rural parts of Yemen. Yemen, because of the blockade and years of war, is experiencing a famine. According to the UN World Food Programme, 16.2 million Yemenis are food insecure. At the beginning of the year, UN agencies gave a warning that 400,000 Yemeni children under the age of 5 would starve to death this year if conditions didn't shift in Yemen. We are approaching the end of 2021 and nothing has fundamentally changed on the ground. Make sure Tim Lenderking uses his meeting in Saudi Arabia to fully lift the blockade on Yemen! Right now, only tiny portions of fuel are being released from Yemeni ports. This is not good enough. The government of Saudi Arabia cannot continue to use the blockade as a bargaining chip. The lives of millions of Yemenis are at stake. Towards Peace, |
