‌John -- State governors sometimes play a critical role in the redistricting process. In many states, they have the power to veto unfair maps drawn by the state legislature.

But in AOTL target states like -- Texas, Ohio, Georgia, and Florida -- we can’t rely on Governors Greg Abbott, Mike DeWine , Brian Kemp, or Ron DeSantis to do what is right by the people.

Part of our strategy to achieve fair maps is to pressure state governors in states like Texas, Ohio, Georgia, and Florida to reject gerrymandered maps drawn by state legislatures. We can’t count on the governors of these states to do the right thing without grassroots pressure. That’s where all of us come in. All On The Line will be out front calling for vetoes of unfair maps, and we’re putting plans together to make our campaigns as impactful as we can.

We set an end-of-month goal of raising $28,758 by Tuesday at 11:59pm. We know we might have to fight back against partisan governors who refuse to do the right thing. We’ll be watching Abbott, DeWine, Kemp, and DeSantis closely because they have a history of showing disdain for our democracy and are likely to get in the way of fair maps.

Here’s why we can’t rely on Governors Greg Abbott, Mike DeWine, Brian Kemp, or Ron DeSantis to support fair maps:
1. Texas Governor Greg Abbott
Texas Democrats were forced to break legislative quorum twice this year to prevent Governor Abbott from signing an anti-voting bill. In response, Abbott threatened to arrest lawmakers to get his quorum and is now on track to sign the bill into law after the state House passed it on Thursday.

2. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine
Despite having the authority to convene the state’s redistricting commission, Gov. DeWine ignored calls from fair map advocates on the ground and waited months before commencing the map-drawing process. He failed to take the necessary preparations to set up the state’s new redistricting process. And just recently, he missed all public redistricting hearings even though he’s a member of the state’s commission charged with drawing maps. One day, he even chose to attend a football team’s training camp instead of hearing from his constituents.

3. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp
This year, Governor Kemp signed a controversial voter suppression law behind closed doors. When one Black lawmaker simply knocked on his office door to witness the signing, she got arrested.

4. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis
A few months ago, DeSantis prohibited some press from covering a signing ceremony for a new voter suppression bill. That’s not all -- Fox News was the only news outlet with an “exclusive” pass to the event.

AOTL will be paying close attention to the map-drawing process. But it’s clear that we can’t rely on Governors Abbott, DeWine, Kemp, or DeSantis to support fair maps on their own.

Our team set an end-of-month goal to raise $28,758 by Tuesday at 11:59pm to help pressure our leaders to do the right thing during the redistricting process this year. Can we count on you to make a donation right now to support our work? [[link removed]]
