I’m not your typical candidate in Western NC, including being a working mom of three. That means our campaign has to throw out the old playbook and run some new plays. Things like knocking doors this early to connect directly with voters.

A recent morning started with my wife out of town, our two-year-old twins hurling raw eggs all over the living room floor and our childcare provider canceling -- the kind of morning where you either start to laugh or cry and then lean into the juggling act that is familiar to so many.

When my son, Wyatt, ran over to help clean up the eggs with a look of sweet, focused determination, it reminded me to take a deep breath and roll with the chaos. “We’re in it,” is the phrase my wife, Meg, uses for moments like this.

I think we need more people in Congress who live in the day-to-day realities of being a working parent and will fight for the kinds of policies that help working families.

But right now this also means I need to use a wide range of strategies to raise the funds required to win this campaign. The old playbook -- spending 8 hours a day dialing for dollars all day -- is just not a fit.

Summer is a notoriously tough time to raise money. And now that August is almost over, I’m pushing hard to meet my fundraising goal.
