This Month
California is suffering from its worst fire season in years, yet by Thanksgiving it could have a far-right governor who dismisses climate science and wants to do away with the progressive environmental policies that the state has led on for years. We have just three weeks to turn the tide, and we’re working hard with our members to urge Californians to stop the recall. Recent polling shows a massive enthusiasm gap between Democrats and Republicans, and that Californian progressives have not absorbed the seriousness of this threat. Please watch and share our new explainer video, particularly with your friends and family in the state, to raise awareness that Californians must vote no on the recall on September 14! On MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, People For President Ben Jealous discussed our August 24 rally to urge President Biden to lead on voting rights and call on the Senate to remove the filibuster as an obstacle. “It shouldn’t be easier to fix roads and bridges than it is to ensure that our democracy works,” Jealous told Maddow, explaining why we have been urging President Biden to do more on this critical issue. Check out the whole interview now! This month, we rolled out our new Action of the Week series, where we spotlight one thing you can do to protect our democracy. Our members took action to protect the vote and stop gerrymandering, because the threat to our voting rights is the most severe that it’s been since the Jim Crow era. Watch the videos and read the blogs below for step-by-step tools on how you can call your senator or sign a petition to ensure that everyone has safe access to the ballot box! Members of People For’s Young Elected Officials Network took action this month both by working within their communities to make sure everyone has a seat at the table and by pushing our federal government to do better by We The People. Illinois House Representative Kam Buckner spoke with us about why it was important for him to go into public service. And the Network’s members were part of the more than 100 state legislators who came to Washington, D.C. from across the country to urge the Senate to protect voting rights by passing the For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, and the D.C. statehood bill.
