This month, the Census Bureau released its 2020 data and set Republicans into a frenzy to redraw the district maps and attempt to gerrymander Democrats out of the House majority. Perhaps permanently.

They see how we’ve passed the For the People Act in the House to get the corrupting influence of dark money out of our elections, and how we’re standing up for the right to vote in the face of a relentless GOP campaign to strip it away.

They are afraid that we are showing the American people how to actually make progress after defeating the unquestioned leader of their party, Donald Trump.

Democrats just passed the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in the House this week without a single Republican vote. Now it’s up to the Senate. And they must abolish the filibuster and pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the For the People Act . Before it’s too late.

We need to ban partisan gerrymandering, get dark money out of politics, and guarantee voting access no matter what voter suppression efforts Republicans attempt to pass.

Kevin McCarthy and his entire GOP caucus have shown that there is no line they won’t cross, no norm they won’t violate, and no authoritarian power grab they won’t embrace if they believe it will help them win elections. If Republicans gerrymander their congressional district lines, it’ll be nearly impossible to hold the House – even with the majority of Americans on our side. Perhaps permanently.

It’s downright despicable that in today’s political climate Republicans can openly rely on dishonest tactics such as voting restrictions and gerrymandering to win elections. It’s a telltale sign that we need to reform our country’s broken political system to protect against these types of injustices.

We need to abolish the filibuster. Then, we can pass democratic protections to ensure a fair redistricting process. But with the GOP outraising us every single day, we must ensure Democrats have the resources to win our races and keep our majorities. And every day that is becoming more and more of an uphill battle.

The GOP is leveraging voter suppression laws and gerrymandering because they know they can’t win a House majority on their own merits.

They could take back the House by gerrymandering just four states: North Carolina, Texas, Florida, and Georgia. We need to do everything in our power to stop them.
