John,
In the wake of the IPCC report being released,Green Peer Natalie Bennett said 'You can’t fix broken food, energy, or economic systems – let alone environmental systems – with the practices that broke them’, making the point that we need a complete systems change to save our planet.
As Greens, we know that the problems we are facing cannot and will not be resolved overnight. But there is hope. We must act now to put the frameworks in place for environmental accountability and an overhaul of the systems we live under.
The Environment Bill presents a real opportunity to set standards for how we treat our planet and make sure that the government is held accountable for their actions.
But, the way the bill is currently designed won't hold them to their word. It won't make it a crime to destroy natural resources. We know that targets without legislation will result in no accountability nor action.
In September, the Environment Bill will move to report stage. We don't have much time left to put pressure on peers, MPs and the public to make sure that we create a bill that requires the government to protect our planet, by law. That's why we are asking you to sign our petition.
