Just this week House Democrats passed the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, a historic piece of legislation that would help restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act, which has been gutted by recent Supreme Court rulings.
Now, it awaits passage in the Senate where it, along with other voting rights legislation such as the For the People Act, is currently blockaded by far-right senators who are doing everything they can to support the voter suppression measures being enacted across the country. We must not let them win.
Now more than ever we must stand up to the forces that are working against us in one of the largest concerted efforts to prevent people from casting their vote and have that vote counted. We must stand up for our democracy and urge our elected officials in Congress to protect that sacred right.
The John Lewis Voting Rights Act would restore the original preclearance requirements that were gutted by the Supreme Court’s 2013 Shelby County decision, add new nationwide requirements, and provide additional vital protections to increase the VRA's effectiveness in protecting voting rights across the country.
These protections are especially important now as nearly 20 states have passed over 30 bills designed to restrict access to the ballot box. And unless the Senate acts quickly, we’ll run out of time to prevent the worst of this new wave of state laws from taking effect before the 2022 midterm elections, not to mention the havoc they would create for the next presidential election.
