John,
The March on Washington took place 58 years ago today.
It was a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights movement that helped push our democracy toward justice and freedom.
But our fight for progress is not done.
In almost every state across this nation, including here in North Carolina, the most fundamental right, the right to vote is under attack. Congress must act immediately to protect voting rights.
When the March on Washington happened and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech, voter suppression was rampant.
Many African Americans -- especially African American women, like my mom Lou -- did not have access to the ballot box.
On this anniversary, I think about how hard my grandparents and my mother fought for the right to vote. It is an affront to them and all who marched for Civil Rights that elected officials today are trying to strip Americans of the right to vote.
I think about my sons and all of our children, and how important it is that the next generation have their voices heard. It is their right.
I will be a tireless champion for voting rights and democracy in the Senate, and I know this legislation cannot wait. We must get this done now. Thank you for adding your voice, especially today.
