My colleague Alex Padilla is defending one of California’s U.S. Senate seats after being appointed to fill Vice President Kamala Harris’ vacancy. Alex is the son of Mexican immigrants who worked long hours as a cook and housekeeper to keep their family afloat. He went on to spend his life serving the people — as a community organizer, as Los Angeles City Council President, as a California State Senator, as California’s Secretary of State, and now, as California’s first Latino U.S. Senator.
Alex’s commitment to our shared progressive values is undeniable — he’s a vocal advocate for Medicare for All and a Green New Deal — but his re-election is far from guaranteed. It’s going to take serious grassroots support to help Alex defend his seat and Democrats’ Senate majority in the year ahead.
We can’t achieve our top progressive priorities without ending the filibuster and maintaining our Congressional majorities in 2022. Keeping Alex in the U.S. Senate is critical to both of those fights, and I’m deeply grateful to everyone who can join me in supporting his campaign.
