Mourning Our Fallen Heroes
|
|
This week was the deadliest for America's military in Afghanistan since 2011. The United States tragically lost 13 service members. I watched this news unfold with profound sadness. As the mother of an active-duty Marine officer, my heart breaks for these families. Their children were heroes, who bravely answered the call to serve. These compassionate souls sacrificed their own lives so that American citizens and our allies could escape the devastation that has escalated in Afghanistan.
I ask that you join me in continuing to offer our prayers and deepest condolences to their families. We must also keep those who remain in Afghanistan in our thoughts and prayers. May God Bless America and continue to bless those who are answering the call to serve under extraordinarily difficult circumstances.

President Biden Has Failed as Commander in Chief and Must Resign or Face Impeachment
|
|
The unprecedented crisis in Afghanistan is the direct result of the Biden Administration's failure to lead. President Biden has ignored the advice and counsel of his senior military and national security experts and has lied repeatedly to the American people. He has refused to accept responsibility for the situation or address the grim reality on the ground in Kabul.
Biden's failure to act decisively while Americans and others are in harm's way is a dereliction of duty, which is why I renew my call for Biden and everyone responsible for this disastrous and deadly strategy to resign or face impeachment. His shameful handling of this catastrophe has cost American lives. He has demonstrated from the start of this crisis that he is not capable of serving competently as Commander in Chief of the U.S. Armed Forces.
After careful consideration and with a heavy heart at the state of our nation, this week I led a letter with 13 other members of Congress calling on Speaker Pelosi to begin impeachment proceedings. Congress has the duty to oversee the Executive Branch and provide for the common defense of our nation. We do not have confidence in President Biden’s ability to continue serving as Commander in Chief. Read my letter to Speaker Pelosi by clicking here.

Pelosi's $3.5 Trillion Tax and Spending Spree
|
|
Speaker Pelosi called the House back to Washington this week not to address the crisis in Afghanistan, but rather to vote on a $3.5 trillion backdoor budget resolution that paves the way for passage of Senator Bernie Sanders’ radical “human infrastructure” package.
At a time when New Yorkers are facing skyrocketing inflation, Speaker Pelosi and Democrats in Congress think the appropriate solution is to raise your taxes and force Americans to pay for one of the most expensive and wasteful spending bills in our nation’s history. This legislation is horrible for our country. It takes the worst of the progressive Blue State policies we have in New York and makes them the national standard. It will hurt our economic recovery efforts, increase taxes on small businesses, kill American jobs, and undermine our competitiveness. The Democrats’ plan threatens to expand the welfare state so that Americans are forced to rely on the government from cradle to grave.
I also opposed this legislation because of the way it was jammed through the House without even being debated and considered. Speaker Pelosi knew she couldn’t win playing by the rules, so she changed them at the last minute. This is not how the U.S. House of Representatives should work. We are the world’s greatest deliberative body, and we should live up to this distinguished honor.

Fighting to Defend the Integrity of our Elections
As co-chair of the Election Integrity Caucus, I'm fighting everyday to ensure our elections are free, fair, and transparent. This week, Speaker Pelosi rushed through H.R. 4, which is yet another unconstitutional bill from the left that undermines the integrity of the democratic process. It completely eviscerates commonsense reforms enacted at the state level like voter ID and grants unprecedented power to unelected Washington bureaucrats.
Because this bill is so bad for American democracy, Speaker Pelosi rushed it through the House of Representatives without a single committee hearing and never provided duly elected members of Congress the opportunity to meaningfully change the bill through the amendment process. At a time when Americans are demanding free, fair, and transparent elections, H.R. 4 is an extreme effort by the Democrats to rig the system, manipulate the process, and take power away from states. I will continue fighting this bill as it now heads to the Senate. I urge all Americans to contact their Senators and demand that they oppose this power grab when it comes before the Senate for a vote.

Tenney Introduces Flights for Freedom Act
|
|
I was shocked and disappointed when it was first reported that the Biden Administration was charging Americans stranded in Afghanistan for lifesaving flights out of the country. While the Administration has since backed off its plan to charge Americans for these flights following widespread opposition, the fact remains that NO American should ever have to buy their way to safety. This week, I introduced the Flights for Freedom Act to ensure the US government doesn’t go back on its promise and solicit payments from Americans evacuating Afghanistan.

My Votes This Week
I'm committed to restoring transparency to government, which is why I explain every vote I take on the House floor. While we may not always agree, you will always know where I stand on the issues and how I vote in Congress. To read more about my votes, please click here.
-
I voted “Yes” on S. 325, to amend the Alyce Spotted Bear and Walter Soboleff Commission on Native Children Act. This bipartisan bill would extend the deadline for the commission’s report on native children by two years, giving the commission more time to develop recommendations on how to improve federal efforts and programs that benefit these youth. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the commission was not able to host in person hearings and listening sessions to gather public input. This extension is necessary to ensure the findings are appropriate and accurate. This bill passed the House by a vote of 418-7.
-
I voted “Yes” on S. 272, the Congressional Budget Justification Transparency Act. This commonsense bill would require full transparency with taxpayer money, directing the heads of federal agencies to regularly publish details on their agency’s funding and spending on their website. Americans deserve to know how their taxes are being spent and this bill is an important step toward maximizing government transparency. This bill passed the House by a vote of 423-1.
-
I voted “No” on H.R. 4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. The unconstitutional proposal undermines the integrity of our elections. The bill would overturn the Supreme Court’s 2013 ruling in Shelby County v. Holder, which effectively struck down the half-century old, outdated coverage formulas under Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act. This bill passed the House by a vote of 220-212.
-
I voted “No” on S. Con. Res. 14, a resolution to initiate the reconciliation process for the Democrat’s $3.5 trillion spending plan. It is astonishing that at a time when Americans are facing skyrocketing inflation, Speaker Pelosi and many in Congress believe the appropriate solution is to raise taxes and force Americans to pay for one of the most expensive and wasteful spending bills in our nation’s history. This bill will advance a far-left social agenda, including the Green New Deal, mass amnesty, and an unparalleled expansion of the welfare state. In addition, it will also undermine the long-term viability of Medicare and increase taxes on our small businesses. This resolution passed the House by a vote of 220-212.

Small Business Town Hall in Rome
I enjoyed hosting another Town Hall as part of my Small Business Outreach Tour across New York's 22nd Congressional District. More than 25 small businesses attended the open forum to ask questions, discuss their challenges, and share their priorities for our economic recovery. As a Member of the House Small Business Committee, I’m committed to helping our small businesses not only keep their doors open, but grow and thrive right here in upstate New York. I appreciated the detailed questions and in-depth discussions and will take their feedback with me to Congress as I fight for our community in Washington.

Helping American Families Make it Home
|
|
My office is continuing to work tirelessly to help American families make it out of Afghanistan. On Friday, I was relieved to learn that a family we were working closely with who had two young children made it out safely. As the situation continues to deteriorate, every minute matters. My office is in constant contact with the Department of State and officials on the ground in Afghanistan to ensure every American makes it home. President Biden must commit to seeing this vital mission through until the end. If you or a loved one needs our assistance, please call either of my two district offices as soon as possible.
