John, we have an update on the Census to share:
The official 2020 U.S. Census data is finally out — and with that, confirmation that New York will lose a seat in the House. Now, the process of redrawing district lines is finally underway.
The good news? It's looking more and more likely that the district loss will come from upstate, as New York's population growth has been located within the New York City region.
But the bad news is that if an upstate New York district is removed, it's possible that downstate districts like ours will have their lines redrawn to "absorb" heavily GOP parts of the state. What's more, it's likely that potential opponents to Jamaal's seat are waiting for district lines to be finalized — amongst other things — before making their final decision to challenge him or not.
We know we can't control whether or not Jamaal will face a challenge in his next election, John. But what we can control is proving to our opposition that our movement has the resources, tools, and supporters to run a competitive campaign. That's why hitting every goal from here on out — including our $20,000 end-of-month email fundraising goal for August — is so crucial.
If we reach our goal, we'll be able to adequately prepare for whatever challenges redistricting may bring — and prove that a people-powered movement like ours is here to stay. So, can we please count on you to chip in $3 before our deadline?
