Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) began working in Afghanistan in 1980. Forty-one years later—despite the current instability, massive displacement, and an uncertain future—the roughly 2,300 MSF staff remaining in the country continue to provide vital care to those who need it most.

Our principles of independence, impartiality, and neutrality have guided our decision to continue providing care in all five provinces where we have projects.

2001: An MSF clinic in Qeysar, a remote mountainous village in Faryab province, provides consultations to people of all ages.

2012: Dr. Mahboobullah Shafiq, an ICU supervisor with MSF, examines a young patient in the Kunduz Trauma Center, which had recently opened its doors to provide much-needed surgical care and physical therapy. The only trauma center of its kind in the region, it was destroyed by US airstrikes in 2015. MSF plans to reopen the trauma center this year.

2016: An MSF physiotherapist looks over the X-rays of a 14-year-old boy with broken bones who is recovering from surgery at Boost hospital in Lashkar Gah.

2017: Khost maternity hospital opened in 2012 and is able to handle obstetrical emergencies 24 hours a day. Here, Dr. Severine Caluwaerts, an MSF obstetrician-gynecologist and OCB Women’s Health Advisor, consults with her patient.

2020: MSF team members at the neonatal intensive care unit at Boost hospital, in Lashkar Gah, Helmand province. At the time, Boost hospital was among the biggest MSF-run facilities worldwide, with 300 beds and more than 700 staff.

2021: MSF’s COVID-19 treatment center in Gazer Gah, Herat.
