Teaching them young!

Raul and Vanesa (a couple who directs one of our supported shelters in Tijuana) enlisted the help of their son Johan Raul to help feed the migrant families who remain and continue to arrive to El Chaparral migrant encampment.

We are so touched by the efforts of Raul and Vanesa to not only help prepare meals and deliver them, but for teaching the importance of compassion and active love! Change starts at home!

Our groups have been trading extreme heat conditions with a little over 100 degrees but almost 100% humidity makes for equally challenging water drops at this point in the year! We still have around two more months of summer heat. With the strong heat comes with having smaller groups go out at times, but nevertheless, they are able to stock key locations on multiple routes that they hope someone can find in the time of need.

In the past two weeks, one group carried out three drop routes, in multiple counties, over an almost 300 square mile region. On one of the drops, we found paperwork of an asylum seeker that was denied entrance into the United States. Unfortunately, that is all too common of a story for those that take the journey through the mountains and desert. Finding a good number of consumed supplies from previous drops is what keeps our group pushing and going further and further to drop as much water and items as possible.

This month's Day Laborer Outreach event served around 75 people! That means 75-day laborers received a care package complete with snacks, socks, a toothbrush and other hygiene products, and more. Our team also assisted the day laborers with a big donation of durable work pants, tennis shoes, and other clothes.

With these donations and care packages we also include Know Your Rights cards or "Red Cards". These cards are an important tool for day laborers because all people in the United States, regardless of immigration status, have certain rights and protections under the U.S. Constitution. The Red Cards help people assert their rights and defend themselves in many situations, such as when ICE agents goes to the home improvement store they work at, or to their home.

Many of the day laborers we assist are undocumented, low-income, and even homeless, making this assistance all the more important. Like all of our programs, our humanitarian aid aims to address their most urgent needs, but also to shed light on an important part of our community left without assistance and protections, and is also overlooked.

We have freed another person from for-profit immigration prison! This brings our grand total to 91 bonds posted! Roman is a 34-year-old asylum seeker from Venezuela who spent 5 months inside the Otay Mesa Detention Center.

Our friend Roman broke his arm in two-places while inside detention, and still had no complaints, instead had nothing but gratitude and hope for the future. We want to invite you to become the hope for our migrant siblings!

This year, we want to free 100 people from immigration detention, and we need YOUR help. We are so close to our goal and our funds are running low. When you donate to our Familias Reunidas Immigration Bond Fund you are helping a mother hug her son, a husband hug his spouse, friends be together again, and so much more!

After a string of failures to our migrant communities, we are heartbroken and disappointed at this Administration for once again putting them at risk, and further decimating the asylum seeking process. We will not stop fighting and we will not be silent. We demand the end of MPP, and we demand protection for migrants and asylum seekers.
We have said it before, and we say it again.
MIGRANT LIVES ARE NOT DISPOSABLE.

To take action, call your local representatives to help us keep the Biden Administration accountable for their actions.

** Leave No One Behind Project Unveils Deported Veterans Mural
------------------------------------------------------------
By Alexandra Rangel

A new mural honoring deported veterans was unveiled Saturday in Barrio Logan.
Veterans who were convicted of crimes but do not have U.S. citizenship are often deported back to their native country. Such was the case for Laura Meza, who was deported to Costa Rica in 2009 after serving in the U.S. Army.

“Veterans are often suffering from PTSD. Sometimes that results in them committing some sort of crime that gets them deported,” Dulce Garcia, the executive director of Border Angels said.

She’s worked with deported vets who aren't able to come back to the U.S. due to immigration policy for service members.
