John,
This summer, Jared has been hard at work advocating for Maine's Second District and breaking through partisan gridlock to deliver results. Here is just some of what Jared has been up to since our last newsletter.
CALLING FOR THE CONTINUED EVACUATION OF AMERICANS AND AFGHAN PARTNERS FROM AFGHANISTAN:
As a Marine veteran who served in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, Jared has been a strong supporter of the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. Last week he joined other members of the For Country Caucus to urge the Biden Administration to keep American troops on the ground in Kabul and control Hamid Karzai International Airport until all Americans who want to leave the country are evacuated. Following yesterday's attacks, Rep. Golden reiterated his stance, stating that we should honor the lives lost by completing the mission and ensuring no American is left behind. Read more of Jared's statement on the attack at Kabul airport here.
PUSHING FOR PASSAGE OF THE BIPARTISAN INFRASTRUCTURE BILL:
Throughout the summer, Jared has worked with a bipartisan group of his colleagues to negotiate the nation’s largest infrastructure investment in decades. Their proposal successfully passed the U.S. Senate earlier this month, and on Tuesday, a group of 9 House Democrats, including Rep. Golden, secured an agreement with House Democratic leadership for a standalone vote on the infrastructure package by September 27 and a more collaborative process on budget reconciliation. Learn more about this successful agreement here.
SUPPORTING LOCAL JOBS:
Jared successfully blocked a Pharma-backed amendment that would have threatened hundreds of jobs at Twin Rivers Paper in Madawaska. The amendment would have lifted the requirement for drug companies to include paper inserts in their medication -- many of which are made right here in the Second District.
Maine is also home to a growing mass timber industry that spans loggers, sawmill workers, UMaine researchers, and timber producers. Recently, Jared secured a provision that would direct the Department of Defense to conduct a pilot program for the use of mass timber products in military construction -- a policy that could bring jobs to the district and support the next generation of workers in our forest product industry.
ADVANCING LEGISLATION TO PROTECT VOTING RIGHTS:
On Tuesday, Jared voted in favor of H.R. 4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which if enacted would reaffirm and strengthen the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Jared is proud to have co-sponsored H.R. 4 and helped it successfully pass out of the House of Representatives.
We know that none of this would have been possible without your continued support. Thank you for being on our team.
Sincerely,
Team Golden
