Earlier this month, Senate Republicans blocked debate on the For the People Act a widely supported bipartisan reform bill that would transform our democracy into one that represents, reflects, and responds to all of us.
But in the face of this obstruction, we are prepared to make our voices louder.
We will not sit idly by while our freedom to vote is under attack by far-right state lawmakers across the country who want to put up barriers that make it harder to vote -- especially for people of color.
Senate Republicans continue to demonstrate they are not willing to stand up to these attacks on voting rights as long as it helps them win elections. The Senate must take up the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act as a top priority in September after they return from recess.
This is a turning point for our nation and Senate Democrats and President Biden need to act boldly and outline their plans for removing the filibuster as an obstacle to legislation that ensures our freedom to vote.
Every single fight for the advancement of civil rights in our nation’s history has been met with resistance and required everyday Americans, like yourself, to rise up to meet the moment and demand change.
Together, we can and will protect our freedom to vote.
