Friend,

Yesterday, I was devastated to learn that two bombings at the Kabul airport took the lives of brave U.S. troops and Afghans.

As a third-generation veteran myself, I know that this is the worst nightmare for families waiting for service members to come home. I cannot imagine the pain these families must feel now – and my heart goes out to the Afghans who have lost their loved ones and continue to live in fear.

The situation in Afghanistan is dire, and I am focused on helping to save as many lives as we can. And as the first Afghan refugees arrive in the Philadelphia area, I'm reaching out today to tell you how you can help:

* If you live near Philadelphia and have access to a car, HIAS ([link removed]) and the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service ([link removed]) are looking for volunteers to pick up Afghan refugees from the airport.

* If you have extra space to house a family in need, HIAS ([link removed]) and Airbnb ([link removed]) are looking for temporary hosts for immigrant families.

* If you are able to donate food or other necessities, please find out what items refugees need on the HIAS ([link removed]) or Nationalities Service Center ([link removed]) websites.

* If you are able to make a monetary donation, the International Rescue Committee ([link removed]) is currently accepting donations to support Afghan families.

It’s not possible to find the right words to properly honor the lives of the people lost in yesterday's attacks. We can honor these lost lives with our actions and continue to uphold American values, welcoming refugees into our country with open arms.

Thank you,

Chrissy
