Four Stories You Should Know About

1. WE BELONG TOGETHER MAKING WAVES

The conversations around preserving LGBTQ neighborhoods during the redistricting process are going strong! Pride Source covered our work with Equality Michigan this week, while The Austin Chronicle asked a question for the ages: will Austin ever have a gayborhood?(We hope so!)

Meanwhile, Vice President of Political Programs Sean Meloy testified in front of the Allegheny County (PA) congressional redistricting hearing on why LGBTQ people must be considered in the state’s redistricting process. Watch the full hearing here.

2. SWING STATE UPDATE: PENNSYLVANIA

One state where redistricting efforts will have a huge impact: Pennsylvania (that’s where Sean’s testimony and We Belong Together come in!). We have a lot of seats at the state and local level to preserve – and a whole new slate of races to win.

Flipping Pennsylvania’s open U.S. Senate seat won’t be easy – but Malcolm Kenyatta is up to the task. He joins the growing number of millennial Black men running for office, ensuring a diverse set of voices are being heard on the campaign trail. If elected, Malcolm would be the first gay man and first Black LGBTQ person ever elected to the U.S. Senate!

And while it’s still early in the campaign, recent polling looks good for Malcolm. Thirty-seven percent of Democratic primary voters are undecided, and Malcolm is focused on running a strong grassroots campaign focused on introducing himself to as many voters as possible. It’s a slow and steady strategy that’s sure to pay off on Election Day.

Brian Sims, our candidate for Pennsylvania Lt. Governor, has announced a historic fundraising haul and reported donors from all 50 states and U.S territories. While Brian is an inspiration to pro-equality forces, extreme-right activists are salivating to take him down. We’re prepared to respond to any attacks he may face.

Tyler Titus, running to be the first trans county executive in U.S. history, currently holds a 3% lead over their opponent, Brenton Davis, and holds a steady lead in moderate voters, a key demographic in this swing seat. Tyler also just announced a huge endorsement from Governor Tom Wolf, which is sure to give them a campaign boost!

 

3. OUR LATEST ROUND OF ENDORSEMENTS ANNOUNCED!

We’re endorsing 20 more candidates for the 2021 and 2022 campaign cycles, bringing our total number of endorsements to 149! As President & CEO Mayor Annise Parker noted, the candidates elected in state and local governments will have a huge impact in the fight for LGBTQ equality. Learn about our latest endorsements here!

4. WINNING IN THE BIG EASY WON’T BE EASY

It won’t be easy to shatter a rainbow ceiling in Louisiana (especially in a crowded primary!), but Spotlight candidate Mariah Moore is more than ready to make history as the first out transgender candidate elected to public office in the state. Mariah took a minute to send a message to her future constituents: she’s ready to put the people of New Orleans City Council District D first. And she announced a big endorsement from Step Up for Action!
