Book Review & Telehealth Letters
The August 2021 issue features a review by Frank Sloan of The U.S. Healthcare Ecosystem by Rob Burns. Sloan calls it a “uniquely comprehensive, up-to-date description of US health care” that provides new insights even for experts in the field.

While he provides some criticism of the book, particularly for what he sees as a lack of explanation for certain complex terms and conclusions, Sloan makes clear in his review that Burn’s work is well worth reading for those studying or researching health care.

Also in the August issue of Health Affairs is discourse surrounding a March 2021 article by Jorge Rodriguez and colleagues about disparities in telehealth use among California patients with limited English proficiency.

In one letter, Denise Payán and Hector Rodriguez build on the research and identify additional research priorities to promote telehealth equity in the United States. They emphasize a need for better data distinguishing video and audio-only visits and funding for telehealth implementation research in federally qualified health centers.

In a second letter, Jorge Rodriguez and colleagues reply, agreeing with Payán and Rodriguez and discussing the need for policies supporting digital inclusion, including technology access and literacy.

Today on Health Affairs Blog,  Rena Conti and Fiona Scott Morton discuss a White House report issued in June 2021 that sets forth policies to build a resilient supply of prescription drugs.

David Johnson and coauthors discuss several viable models for commercial payers to adopt value-based payment for specialty care.
