John, Republicans may have caught us off guard when they used the redistricting process to seize unearned majorities the last time around. But this time, we’ve been preparing for this moment for years -- and we have powerful new tools to aid us in the fight for fair maps:
But make no mistake: Just because we won’t be blindsided doesn’t mean we don’t have a tough fight ahead. Although there are some new factors working in our favor this year, the opponents of fair maps have some new advantages as well:
- Map-drawing technology has become significantly more sophisticated in recent years, making it easier than ever for unscrupulous politicians to pick and choose the voters they think will give them the best chance at victory.
- The conservative majority on the Supreme Court has declared that partisan gerrymandering claims are beyond the purview of the federal judiciary, making it impossible to challenge even the worst partisan gerrymanders in federal court.
- Harsh new voting restrictions have been implemented in Republican-led states across the country. By making it harder for eligible citizens to cast their ballots, Republican map manipulators are ensuring it’s harder to vote them out of office, too.
The most powerful way to fight back is to build a movement of informed, engaged citizens who can mobilize to implement fair maps in states all over the country. We’ve been working to do exactly that since our launch in early 2017 -- and now our mission has never been more urgent.
With the census data states need to draw their maps now released and the redistricting process officially underway, we’re running out of time in the fight for fair maps. So as our work enters its most critical phase, grassroots support from people like you is more important than ever.
