By a vote of 220-212, Congress took a monumental step this week toward passing our $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill. By some measures, this bill would be the most consequential step forward for working families since the New Deal era.

Not enough people are talking about how big this could be!

The resolution would invest in a number of key priorities:

✅ Fund universal pre-K for children ages 3-4 ✅ Expand Medicare to cover hearing, dental and vision ✅ Offer two years of free community college ✅ Cement $300 monthly child tax credit checks for families ✅ Address climate change head on by reducing emissions ✅ Support working parents with childcare funding ✅ Lower prescription drug costs ✅ Establish a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants ✅ Address climate change head on by reducing emissions ✅ Raise taxes on the wealthy and large corporations

Look, the truth is that without the leadership of Alexandria and her progressive colleagues, this bill would have died in the House this week.

At the last possible moment before a key vote, a handful of conservative Democrats threatened to block the bill altogether. They wanted to pass a much weaker Republican-backed bill that invests in physical infrastructure only so that they could chip away or vote ‘no’ altogether on this budget bill.

Alexandria and the progressive caucus showed solidarity, refusing to cave and reaffirming they’ll only vote for the infrastructure bill if the House passes this package that delivers on overdue promises for working families. It made all the difference, and in the end, the resolution to move forward passed by just a few votes.
