Friend,
This week, after a high stakes standoff between Speaker Pelosi and a group of House moderates, every member of the Democratic caucus in the House of Representatives
voted for the $3.5 trillion Budget Resolution, with extensive climate and clean energy investments, and set up a timeline for late September for a House vote on the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal.
This victory belongs to you, voters and advocates raising your voices for once-in-a-generation action to tackle the climate crisis in a way that addresses racial and economic inequality.
The investments Congress is setting in motion through the budget resolution and will deliver in reconciliation must meet the moment on climate and justice. They must cut carbon pollution at least in half by 2030 and put our nation on the path to 100% carbon-free energy powering our electricity grid and new cars, buses, and buildings by 2035 while delivering at least 40% of investment benefits to communities of color and low-income communities that have borne the brunt of fossil fuel pollution.
From the 'code red for humanity' IPCC report to devastating extreme weather and long-standing environmental and racial injustice and economic inequality,
it's never been more urgent or more important to act on climate at the scale that science and justice require. It's time for the House and Senate to deliver for the people and enact President Biden's Build Back Better agenda into law.
This is a significant step forward, and the next few weeks are an absolutely critical period in the campaign to get our climate, jobs, and justice priorities across the finish line.
With members back home for the next three weeks and committees getting to work writing the reconciliation bill, our advocacy in the states and D.C. could not be more important.
This is a make or break period to ensure the Build Back Better Agenda includes the climate, clean energy, jobs, and justice provisions we've been fighting for all year.
LCV and Climate Power are
investing even more in our push for the passage of bold, transformative policies that center on climate, justice, and jobs. In the first half of August alone, we have invested
more than $14 million in our Climate Action Now efforts, including
countering the false narratives from climate action opponents. Through our multi-state
Great American Build tour, we have taken our movement's message to key Congressional districts to make it clear that
voters overwhelmingly want Congress to act on climate now.
Across the country, our Climate Action Now teams, in coordination with
LCV's 30+ state affiliates, have been applying pressure and demonstrating strong support for climate, justice, and jobs legislation by:
- organizing more than 30 events with members of Congress, cabinet officials, and other federal and local leaders;
- knocking on over 110,000 doors in key states;
- garnering visible support from more than 4,100 small businesses;
- distributing over 8,700 yard signs in key areas where members of Congress will see this in-district support as they return home during August recess;
- recruiting volunteers to be climate action advocates at town halls;
- engaging citizens and raising awareness through one-of-a-kind community-based art activations; and
- placing opinion editorials in papers across the nation to support bold, just climate action.
For a detailed update on our work in the first half of August, read our latest Interested Parties Memo here.
All of this work is in addition to the massive
paid TV and digital campaigns that LCV and Climate Power are running in the districts of members of Congress whose support we need to pass game-changing climate, justice, and jobs legislation.
This unprecedented effort to build a cleaner, healthier, safer, and more just future for all is only possible because of your support. Because of you, LCV is able to continue our work throughout August recess while members are home in their districts and ensure that they hear and heed the demands of their constituents who are
experiencing the devastating impacts of climate change like never before.
Thank you for your partnership and continued support. Together, we can put our nation and our planet on a path to a sustainable and just future.
Onward,
Gene Karpinski
