** A new Chief Executive for Oldham Council has been officially appointed at a special full council meeting on Wednesday 25 August.
------------------------------------------------------------

Harry Catherall, former Chief Executive of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, has now taken post. He has come to Oldham on an interim basis, following a 40-year career in local Government.

Responding to his appointment, Harry said: “I’m delighted to be formally appointed as chief executive and am looking forward to getting started; working with the wider council team to meet the priorities clearly set by the Council’s Leadership.

"Oldham clearly has an ambitious and positive vision for its future and I am keen to play my part in making the town’s plans a reality."

Leader of the Council, Cllr. Arooj Shah called the appointment "great news" and welcomed Harry to Team Oldham: "I have been clear that what Oldham Council needed in a Chief Executive is someone with drive, determination and a real commitment to delivering great public services for local people.

"I have set a clear future direction and set of priorities for the role and it’s clear that Harry is the right person to deliver that vision. His focus in his new role will be to forge stronger relationships between local people and their public services and to steer Oldham’s recovery from the impact of the Covid pandemic.”

Afghanistan: An evolving humanitarian crisis

We are currently collaborating with authorities across Greater Manchester and with central Government, to support the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

We are looking at various options in our borough so that we can support those in desperate need, and are consulting with private rented landlords and social housing providers.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Arooj Shah, says: "Our thoughts are with all those caught up in the crisis in Afghanistan – it’s heart-breaking to see.

“We have been involved in the Afghanistan Relocations and Assistance Policy since 2015, providing accommodation and support to people who were ‘locally engaged’ and working for UK forces in Afghanistan. In February this year, we made a commitment to support a small number of households from Afghanistan, and we will be reviewing this commitment as the situation develops.

Oldhamers have been incredibly generous with offers to donate and help those affected by the crisis. While physical donations have been temporarily paused by Care4Calais, the charity is looking for volunteers and accepting cash donations ([link removed])

Anyone who is looking to provide temporary shelter as part of the crisis can contact Refugees at Home which is co-ordinating room placements in Greater Manchester ([link removed])
