Folks,
When it became clear that far-right groups were using social media to spread disinformation in the Latinx community, Voto Latino sprang into action to fight back and make sure people got the facts. But the flood of disinformation didn’t stop with the last election -- and right now, it’s impacting COVID-19 vaccination rates among Latinos.
As it was in recent elections, Facebook continues to be a hotbed of disinformation. Content on the platform repeatedly sends the message that the vaccine is unreliable or dangerous in some way, despite heaps of scientific evidence proving otherwise. And it’s having dangerous consequences for our families.
PITCH IN TO HELP US FIGHT BACK [[link removed]]
Fortunately, we’ve already been working to combat disinformation surrounding vaccines online, and Fast Company reports that our tests have found effective ways to help Latinos get vaccinated. People who saw our ads were significantly more likely to search for information about how to get the COVID vaccine that people who didn’t.
But with the 2022 elections just over a year away, disinformation is likely to keep ramping up -- and we need to make sure that it doesn’t depress the turnout we need to keep a Democratic majority in Congress who will fight for our communities! We plan to do this a couple of ways:
Keep registering voters. Leading up to the 2020 election, we registered about half a million voters, including more new voters than the margin that helped swing Georgia.
Keep combating disinformation online. We’ll apply the lessons we’ve learned in recent election cycles and during the COVID-19 pandemic to make sure voters get the facts about their choices at the polls.
But team, we’re counting on grassroots supporters like you to keep up our work. So if you can, will you pitch in today to help us keep combating disinformation and empowering Latinx voters all over the country?
